“Have you noticed the tailor above the entrance to number 10, across the street?”
The Halickman Brothers clothing company construct the Halbro building in 1946, in the heart of the garment district.
It doesn’t house a big factory, but on every floor workshops are making ready-to-wear clothing, lingerie, leather and fur garments. Imagine the hum of sewing machines, the clipping of scissors, the steam from the presses and the smell of hides! The textile industry’s workforce is made up mainly of women, among the lowest paid at that time.
In the 1960s, this industry begins moving further north in the city. At the end of the 20th century, many of Halbro's workshops are transformed into businesses, offices, studios and even artists' lofts.
