  • “Look over there! People are picking apples on the mountain: nice, sweet and juicy McIntosh apples.”

As early as 1876, the City creates a park on a large part of the mountain to prevent the uncontrolled cutting of trees. Elected officials also want to offer the population a green space that extends right up to where you’re standing. Since 2005, Mount Royal’s natural and built environment has been under the dual protection of the City and the Québec government.

Before the park was created, the land in front of you was used for agriculture: there were large apple orchards and pastures for livestock. And before the arrival of Europeans, St. Lawrence Iroquoians inhabited the area. Imagine an area planted with corn, squash and beans. According to archaeologists, it's quite possible!
