  • “Cross at your peril! The cars race through this interchange.”

In 1961, the city introduces an actual highway interchange right here, at the intersection of Park and Pine Avenues. Imagine a tangled network of ramps designed to keep motorists moving as quickly as possible in all directions. Make way for cars, a powerful symbol of modern life!

Traffic intensifies. Accidents increase. Pedestrians and cyclists alike dread this intersection.

As early as the 1970s, a local citizens' movement is formed to protest against the interchange, but it isn’t demolished until 2005. The new intersection, installed in 2008, presents a greener, more human and safer face, with an unobstructed view of Mount Royal.
